More Video Archival - Resolution

When archiving stnd 8mm or VHS, what resolution have people found adequate (minimal loss). What codec was used in conjuntion with it?

do you use PAL or NTSC

PAL
352x288 or 352x576 @ 25fps

NTSC
352x240 or 352x480 @ 30fps

Thanks for the info CableCat. I use NTSC. Now I hope I can capture 352x480 directly in MPEG2 with the reg hack to my RR-G. Thanks again.
