    bar

when I capture video, there is a black bar on the left and on top that is about .1cm
this isnt so bad, but when I convert it to DiVX, its about .5cm
does this have anything to do with the fact that its 704x480.
this happens in w98 and 2k with my marvel.

This is the hallmark of Matrox products you've discovered; rest assured, everyone else who uses Matrox equipment experiences the same quirk (and some aren't too happy about it).

The black bar appears when capturing using the Matrox MJPEG codec, no matter what resolution you use. On playback to video, it becomes hidden in your TV's overscan areas. When converting (like you are) to another format, however, it becomes a problem.

Either ignore them or find a way to crop them off. I have no idea what software you have, so I can't suggest anything. Note that RGB captures don't suffer from the same problem.
