Wow what a surprise!
Only Phillips and Panasonic have them in the stores and Panasonic has half the market. What a triumph of marketing!

Not in the mass market stores like Best Buy, Circut City, Fry's etc. where the sales volume is.
Eventually, these will be commodities. When Walmart stocks 'em then % of market share may actually mean something.
I read Phillips is trying to cut deals with Apex, Mintek, etc
to get the volume up and prices down.

Wally, Panasonic is winning mainly due to price.
If you survey the prices of the Panasonic DMR-E30 ($501)
...vs...
...the Philips DVDR 985 ($598)
...price seems to be strongly driving consumer behavior.
In addition, Panasonic is offering two models instead of one.
That means more choice.
Panasonic's new $779 DMR-HS2 is popular because of its internal 40gb hard drive.
I'm not sure what fits your definition of 'mass market' and what doesn't.
All I know is Boise has Ultimate Electronics, which fits my definition of mass market.
Ultimate Electronics carries the Pioneer DVD recorders in addition to the Panasonic and Philips recorders.
I know because we almost bought the Pioneer DVD recorder at the Boise store.
Several 'mass market' Web electronics stores, such as BuyDig.Com, sell the Samsung R3000:
Wal-Mart doesn't sell any digital camcorders here locally other than the cheapest Sony Digital 8 model.
Our local Wal-Mart doesn't sell either the Philips or the Panasonic or the Pioneer DVD recorders, either.
Our local Best Buy sells the Philips and the Panasonic, but the Best Buy doesn't have nearly the selection that our Ultimate Electronics has.
In addition, the Pioneer recorders are far more expensive.
I personally believe there are even other reasons that should become more clear in about six months to twelve months.
