DVD burner....

I plan to buy an A05 (Pioneer).
Any comments?
Pros/Cons? I don't need DVD+R/RW (like also Doc says)
The A05 is on the Ghost 2003 compatibility list too, which is good.
My son-in-law just bought one and he is satisfied, so far.
I am asking anyway

: is the A05 okay or should I look after other models?

The compatibility issue is... Well err, interesting; because whilst there are more diferent devices that support +; fully half of the consumer devices solds are (apparentley) Panasonic (-RAM). Most interestingly these figures did not come from Panasonic, but from a third party.

Apart from the compatibility issue, you still might want to consider Sony's 24x CD-R capability if it's your only drive. I'd have preferred that in my Primera Bravo, but they're only supporting the A05.

I already have a Sony CD burner.

My primary needs are DVD-R and DVD-RAM, which is going to be a major requirent for editing video....especially for those who will be using DVD-VR decks and the new generation of camcorders that will be using DVD-RAM disks.

Ulead is supporting DVD-RAM/VR and other companies will be coming on very soon.

Kinda' makes me glad I went for the Panasonic LF-D311 which, despite people bleating "...you must buy either a Sony DRUx.. or a Pioneer AOx, all the rest are sh*t...", has been an absolute delight for me.
More so as it was two thirds the price of the alternatives.

Apologize my dumb questions; I am not so familiar with DVD burning:
What does it mean: “4.7/9.4GB DVD-RAM (rewritable)”
Is it single/double sided?
The Panasonic LF –D311 available here is only single sided.
The Buffer Capacity of the LF-D311 is only 1 Mb.
Pioneer has 2 MB and Sony 8 MB.
What about the Panasonic SW-9571-CYY? It is not available here, yet, but sure it comes…
More question (Doc): what is “DVD-RAM/VR”

DVD-RAM/VR has potential if it can be edited without recompression.

This is supposed to be the format used by the standalone DVD-RAM recorders form Panasonic. If I can set the timer, record to DVD-RAM move the disk to my computer, fire up MSP7 or VS7, cut the commercials and burn back to DVD+R I'll buy a DVD-R/DVD-RAM like the LF-D311. Sound great on paper, time will tell if they cripple it to appease Hollywood/Advertizers.

I tried the above with the Philips DVCR-985 a while back, while I could edit the DVD+R mpegs by copying them too my hard drive, MSP6.5 always wanted to re-render. I couldn't copy the files recorded on DVD+RW to my hard drive, it acted like cross-linked files, but PowerDVD played it fine. Didn't put much effort into figuring it out as at that point the DVCR was clearly not worth ~$1000 to me.

The Panasonic LF-D311 is compatible with 9.4GB. I bought one about a year ago and it is compatible with the double sided media. It is only 4.7GB per side. The only real problem I know of the 311 is that it doesn't have buffer underrun protection.

DVD-VR (Video Recording) is a new DVD standard that although similar to DVD-Video it adds new feaures for editing. It has a menu file VR_MANGR.IFO and one video file. The menu system makes cell entry points. You can use PowerDVD XP to playback the disk on your PC. DVD-RAM recorders (both camcorders and standalone recorders) make DVD-VR disks.

As mentioned above you can edit DVD-VR on Ulead MSP7, VS7 and DVD MovieFactory 2

Because of a bad case of the flu (YECCHHHH) that's had me down this week I just got around to installing the Panasonic SW-9571-CYY and burning my first DVD-R with it.

I used MSPro7 edited sources and burned using DVDMF2-LE as bundled with it. Settings: 6000 kbps VBR (quality=45/DC=10 in the Advanced menu) & AC3 2/0 audio @224 kbps.

It burned without a hitch to a Panasonic DVD-R blank and it plays perfectly in both of our APEX AD-660 decks; one of which has hacked firmware and the other not. Pause, FF, Freeze Frame, chapters etc. etc. all work as expected.

Next comes a system backup to DVD-RAM then a DVD-VR export to DVD-RAM.

Methinks the next toy in the budget is a DVD-VR deck.

Editing out commercials on the DVD-RAM DVD-VR recordings without re-rendering would make me jump right in!

Thanks, guys for the info to a novice, as me, in DVD.
Now I know a lot (but not all) about DVD.
But, I am still a little bit confused, which DVD burner should I buy?
I have not so much choice here in my country. As someone said, the majority of the DVD burners are Pioneer A0x, Sony or Panasonic (311.)
My uncertainty generates new questions:
I am not a “hardcore” video editor. I make my short, modest family videos, no longer than some hours at the time, and I want to burn them to playable DVD.
The DVD-RAM media is still expensive here and only one dealer can supply DVD-RAM.
Do I need DVD-RAM?
Do I need DVD-VR?
Is DVD-R enough to backup my system?
Is DVD-R enough to burn my videos to DVD playable on stationary DVD players?
My final question is:
Is someone there who burns video with Pioneeer A05/105? You can guess that my favourite is still the Pioneer A05. My son in law is very satisfied. (But, not always a son-in-law has right

)
Should I change my mind?
Certainly, nobody can answer to my questions but some ideas will be appreciated to make my decision.

Love to give you more info on the sony dru-500, i just bought one as it suits my needs and +rw media is much cheaper then dvd-ram media here.

Haven't had chance to burn a 'dvd' yet and as my dvd player is a dedicated pc with a sony dvd drive in it, not much help there.

I can tell you that backup is a breaze with the sony, but thats more to the software bundle that comes with it.

I havn't had a chance to play with -R discs yet for backup so I'm not any help there.

The other reason I chose the sony was with -ram media being expensive it left me the options of both - and + for future compatability.

I got a Sony dru-500,
I have burned several noname -R dvd's without problems(the only discs I had in the beginning was those weirdo noname blanc DVD-R that was a halfyear old).
I have also burned DVD+rw wich works without hickups in my Panasonic A360
