Looking for MPEG-2 Decoder

Where can I find a good mpeg-2 decoder ??

It produces a strange icon at the top right corner of the screen

Perhaps its only on the "free" versions?

Any particular reason why you are looking for a "Mpeg2 decoder"? - you not running PowerDVD or WinDVD somewhere? - you not runing MSP/VS/Premiere for editing?

Yes, all of those, however when I encode in TMPGEnc mpeg-2 from clips previosly encoded in Divx 5.02 with MP3 sound, Windows media player will fail to recognise them.

When I have an mpeg-2 decoder eg. Elecard, this will not happen.

Always thought Mpeg encoding results are the same no matter what the source material is as long as the output settings of the encoder are the same.

Must give your DivX example a try and see what happens.........

Yes, I also had the same impression until I came across some clips encoded in Nandub.
According to the properties info. Video Divx 5.02, Audio MP3.

TMPGEnc will not recognise the audio track and will have to strip and re-encode the audio in VirtualDub. Replace the original sound track in TMPGEnc with the one produced (.wav) and encode 720x576 PAL.

The result will not be viewable in WMP without mpeg2 decoder (Elecard), at least on my PC. but no problems in PowerDVD or WinDVD

Just install a Windows DVD player and an MPEG-2 decoder will be installed with it. I use WinDVD4.

Well - thats the way I have it as well - I use PowerDVD XP

Yes, you are both correct. However with the type of material I mentiond earlyer the only way I get Windiws Media Player to recognise the clips is to install a mpeg-2 decoder. In PowerDVD XP all is ok.
Other .avi clips eg. DV encoded in mpeg-2 in TMPGEnc play fine in Windows Media Player and do not require an "extra" decoder.

I think the problem is with TMPGEnc since the clips in question encode and play with no such promlems when encoded in UMSP. Qulity wise TMPGEnc turns out a better job.

I have no problem playing MPEG-2 in WMP regardless of what encoder generated it.

Now running DX9 and WMP9, but it was the same with DX8.1/WMP7 etc.

I have tried with all possible combinations here and simply always end up with it playing in WMP9 and 7.

Have you got a link to a smallish sourcefile somewhere that contains the offending combination? - I am willing to try it and see..

Thanks for the offer. The file is just over 700Mb and to edit a small clip and leave the original codecs is impossible since I have never used Nandub and do'nt have it

If I re-encode in TMPGEnc (mpeg-2) the produced clip will not play in WMP.

Any reason in particular for the 23.97fps (iso 29.97? or 25?) in the video format specs? ............... is that not perhaps the reason things go pearshaped? - You in PAL land?
