I have the sudden-quit problem only VERY seldom with Terratecs software, so I do use it occasionally - just grabbed a movie with it a few days ago using PicVideo.
Other than that I'd say: use either VirtualVCR or iuVCR. Showshifter might be good as well, diidn't test it.
