Why no MPEG-2? From the sounds of it eithere there is a licensing problem OR he's licensed MPEG-2 technology from a second party.

Either way there are some notable things on his "to do" list;

1. SSE2 support

2. creating an MPEG from multiple *.AVI's. THIS one would be great....

3. new GUI

4. quality improvements

5. a help file (finally!!)

Dr. M, what do you think of the Cinema Craft Encoder Lite for Mpeg-2...better or worse than TMPG..thoughts...also...where can I still find the 12a beta version of the TMPG encoder..thanks

As far as CinemaCraft goes it depends on the version. The Lite version is OK but not spectacular in that it only supports CBR, not VBR. The SE version is quite good. The rub is the price;

Lite: $250.00 USD

SP: $3,980.00 USD

Yes, it's a bit pricy. There is also a question of AMD processor support that I'm not sure has been resolved.

Man, I hope development on bbmpeg is still ongoing... Hopefully the progress of tmpeg hasn't dissuaded Brent Beyeler (and the other developers) from refining it. It was missing some of the features of tmpeg, but it's a very respectable free mpeg-2 encoder.

From what I'm reading on the TMPGEnc home page a licensing fee is demanded from all comers, commercial or not. This makes any shareware or freeware MPEG-2 encoder a target for legal action.

bbMPEG is no longer in development since its author, Brent Beyeler, is now working with MainConcept on MainActor's DVD and MPEG support.

Dr Mordrid: Actually, beta 15 of bbMPEG 1.24 was released a little over a month ago. You just need to look on the delphi forums to get the download links. The development is mainly being done by other developers, and Brent Beyeler is just folding their work into the code base. Apparently someone also just got working 2-pass VBR code working. I haven't yet played with beta 15, but the earlier betas were lightyears beyond 1.23. In fact, if it supported SMP, I'd use it over tmpeg.

That's because you have the Japaneez version, You must install the english patch from TMpgenc and you'll be fine.

Thanks for the info Dr Mordrid. I'm going to have to start learning about MPEG-2 soon. I am no longer satisfied with VCD format. Hopefully something will come along that will allow consumer users to make real DVD format with all the fixins. Right now I am
wasting my great looking digital video on lossey end-formats, namely, MPEG-1.
