Successful Test Of Toshiba D-R1 DVD Player/Recorder With ULEAD

I just tested my new Toshiba D-R1 DVD player/recorder.

I used a single-chip Canon ZR20 Mini DV camcorder.

I connected the 4-pin Firewire cable to the 4-pin front input on the Toshiba D-R1

I recorded the contents of the Mini DV tape to a DVD-RAM disc.

I then extracted the video from the disc by placing the disc in my Panasonic SW-9571 DVD-RAM/DVD-R/DVD-RW drive.

The extracted MPEG-2 video had the following properties:

NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Field Order B
(DVD-NTSC), 4 : 3
Video data rate: 9000 kbps (CONSTANT)
Audio data rate: 384 kbps
AC-3 Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)

(I could've chosen VARIABLE encoding.)

I edited the file in Ulead MediaStudio Pro 7's Video Editor.

The Ulead Smart Render technology prevented any unnecessary re-rendering of the file.

Rendering was confined only to specific segments where I applied titles, transitions, and filters.

The stereo AC-3 audio was re-rendered.

The video/audio quality is P-E-R-F-E-C-T.

I can't tell the difference between playback of the DVD-RAM disc and the original DV.

Sounds like a good device to convert those old VHS tapes to disk format. Now if only the disks would be guaranteed to last 20 years +..

Nice plug for the Mpeg2 editing capabilities of MSP.

What DVD authoring software did you use?

I am curious if the quality is the same, better or worse than letting DVD Workshop render from the DV AVI files.

I used Ulead DVD Workshop to author.

I'd say the quality of the Toshiba MPEG encoder is better than the MainConcept encoder when encoding is done at equal data rates.

To my eye, anyway.
