extracting a frame from an mpeg

    Hi,

I setting up a system to encode clips and upload them to a web based database and I want to find a simple way of extracting a frame to use as the thumbnail image on the website to download the clip.

The clips will be encoded to MPEG1, ASF or RM

ideally I need a program that can be executed from java/javascript and simply extract the specified frame number (or closest I frame)

    Any ideas??

Until you said the "J" words, I was ready to say VirtualDub.
There is a menu option to "Copy frame to clipboard" (choice
of input or output frame). Open your graphics application of choice,
paste, and there's your frame. I have used this to make
    CD labels with great success.

IrfanView can do the same. Just right-click/copy, then paste and save.
