Question is how well does it really perform on this low end Mac?

Too bad they really gouge on the options I mean:

+$425 for 1GB DDR RAM -- this is maybe worth $150-200 in the PC world.

+$100 for 4x DVD+-R/RW -- $50 or $100 buys you 16X on a PC.

OTOH, looking at the cost of most PC HDV editing apps and plug-ins one could just about buy the Mac mini and give it a try!

The base 256MB might be fine for awhile, but any serious video editing is going to have one wishing for more.

The good news is that, while Apple would rather you not, it is apparently rather easy to replace the memory with a cheaper 3rd party DIMM.

32 MB video memory doesn't exactly leave me reeling.

Interesting that there's still a modem jack in this age when many PC's are shipping without modems. Ironic especially when you consider that (generally speaking) anyone with the money for a mac is going to go broadband at the first opportunity.

If Apple is trying to penetrate the low-end market they still have a ways to go.

The modem jack is not so strange when you think about a section of its potential market.

An easy to use box for granny to email the kids, surf the web and deal with a few photos.

People who hate computers, like I do, will warm to this machine simply because it's the cheapest Mac ever. It's not just grannys who resent having to spend needless time at a computer. I think most people just want to edit the odd video, maybe record some music, store their stuff on CDs or DVDs, and yes, email, surf the web and touch up a few photos. Who knows, perhaps they'll forget they're using a computer and actually enjoy creating? At the very least they'll be off doing something more important, much sooner.

Couldn't agree more, I have a more powerful pc sitting in the corner, hell, i have a more powerful htpc, but I haven't used them since i got a nice little ibook from work.
