DV Video Camera Recommendation

So my business partner is having a baby...

He wants to get a camera to record all those special moments.

He wants to spend less than $1000 CDN, if possible. Certain brands, haven't looked it up recently but Sony is one of them, we can buy wholesale.

What's a good model for him to get?

Or, if there's no model that currently stands out, what are the important features that I should look out for when helping him choose?

IMHO, avoid Sony and Canon like the plague because of their non-standard IEEE-1394 commands. Personally, I have always preferred Panasonic 3-CCD models. Cannot recommend specific models because NTSC- and PAL-land models are different.
