The top of the line Everio (I think that's the name) uses a decent sized 1/3.6" CCD. I really like the idea of ditching tape. Anyone have any hands on experience with the camcorder? If so how's the quality?

The JVC Everio camcorders have a reputation for disappointing video quality.
I have a DVD disc with some clips that were sent to me by an individual who bought one.
They were "clean" - no noise or anything like that.
But the clips didn't really impress in terms of color or resolution.

Toshiba has released some new hard disk standard definition camcorders reviewed briefly here:

The photos suggest the camcorders feature Canon lenses.
I suspect Canon may have actually manufactured these models.
I have no idea how well they perform.

Thanks for the info. Looks like I'll be waiting a while longer.
What I really want is an HDV based hard disk camera that can do a nice 720p.
