I like Maxtor drives, and have never had a problem with them (no crashing, very very few bad sectors, just good all around performance). My only caveat has been how noisy they are, compared to stuff like WD.

Who knows, perhaps the mechanics of this new drive have improved, resulting in a whispering spindle...

If you're having noise problems with post 6800 series Maxtor drives go to their download pages and get SETACM.EXE.

When you run/extract this file you'll find the AMSET program. AMSET can be used to adjust operating sound levels.

The drive is actually a 40GB/platter design. The question is, why did they not include the second half of the third platter?
