Could you edit your piece on your COMPUTER and then TRANSFER via USB 2.0 back to the camcorder's hard disk and then use the camcorder as a PORTABLE MEDIA PLAYER?
(I suspect the answer is YES!)
Since the camcorder features a variety of CONNECTORS...
1. HDMI (High Definition);
2. Multi-AV (standard definition).
...then one could conceivably play one's finished piece on a wide variety of TVs.
And, if the manufacturers start mass-producing portable media players and get the price down to below $500, then anybody could share their high definition media and completely leap over the high definition DVD formats.

I agree that standard definition DVDs will continue to be necessary for the playback of standard definition material.
And, one *can* easily down-convert high definition video to standard definition and burn it to standard DVD and it looks quite good.
I agree with you about DVD-RAM being a nice option.
I'd like to see a high definition portable media player/recorder that supported mini-DVD-RAM *double-layer* discs.
Right now, the Sony HDR-SR1 just looks awesome to me.
And it's on my Christmas wish list.
However, I'm also very, very curious to see what Panasonic will be offering.
And it seems JVC will surely support AVCHD with the rumored new high definition Everio pictured here:
