Polarizer lens cover and Vignetting

I was out taking photos today and used my circular polarizer for the first time, but for some reason I was getting pretty bad vignetting on some photos, yet others where perfectly fine or had very little vignetting...I'm running a Nikon D50 with a 18-200 VR lens with a polarizer..

Any suggestions?

It's the image stabilization, I can get the same effect on my S3 IS.

Are you using the right polarizer?

There usually is a "slim" variant of a polarizer filter. On my Nikon 24-85 f/2.8-4 I needed to use a "slim polarizer" to avoid vignetting. The difference is only in construction, the slim polarizer is much thinner than a regular one...
(I believe a regular one allows for a screw mount in front, whereas a slim polarizer doesn't)

A Few Important Notes
Do not stack the polarizer on top of any other filters. Otherwise, vignetting may occur when zooming out. .........

you are propably getting vignetting in wide end. (as from optical point of view, it's like adding short tube in the end of bigger opening of the cone. ) At the tele end, there should not be so much problem, because the full area of last element isn't used. Of Course, VR makes the lens use more area of the last element in both ends, but still it should be more visible in wide than in tele.


also, check that your lens last element does not rotate when focusing... This will totally screw up the idea of Circular polarizer.

ah I have my polarizer on top of my UV filter...that could be causing it!

yep. that's what I found with my d70. don't stack filters - bad idea.
