ADSL speed traps

I know this was asked a couple of times already, but most of the sites that were given don't exist anymore or don't work for adsl.

What is the site you test your adsl connection with? Or is it software you test it with? If so, which one?

I got initiated on the adsl server on the 14th of September, but it takes 5 days to register on that 8086 apparently
Tomorrow will be my day to enter the realm of 24/7 online... but for reboots and closing down the adsl modem

I'd love to leave my days of 56kflex behind me. 1Mbit days, feel I am here

The best way to test the "local" speed of your ADSL-connection is to download a chunky file that can't be compressed (or hardly).
By measuring the time it takes to download, you'll get a pretty accurate indication if your connection is up to speed or not.
Your ISP (which is Planet, I believe?) should have a file like that available on one of their servers.
Cistron has a 100MB-file on their servers as well, so you can test the speed between the Planet-network and the Cistron-network.

For external downloads.. well; I experienced that not all connections are very speedy, it's kind of Napster-like behaviour.
But overall it's fast enough for me.

Oh, by the way Jord; did you try to call me last night? I found a unanswered call on my cellphone, showing that someone called at about 22:45.

I usually just pick a site that is known to have an excellent link to the Internet, and grab a big ol' file.

and grab a demo for your favorite title.

I get 1.5 - 2 MBps (12-16Mbps) downloads from there. Just be sure to download either a mpeg1/2/4/divx movie or a zip/rar/etc file.. those won't be compressed much further, thus giving you a good real world download speed result. The larger the file, the more accurate the results of course

Jord, most likely the best RWIN setting you will want/need is 32767... That should max your DL throughput... just retry the link I sent once you've been connected

- xs4all.adsl (newsgroup). Even if you don't have an account with xs4all, it's worth browsing every now and then. Useful info and clueful people. And, of course, the usual usenet quotum of nonsense, flames, clueless newbies and quoting-style wars. Googled.

Actually, the Dutch site mentioned above was inspired by this one, but it seems to have expanded quite a bit further than the original. I can't find any other English sites about the subject at the moment.

Thanks already guys. I'll be checking them all out as soon as everything works.
For as of yesterday, I can reach the KPN server (telephone company adsl server), but my ISP doesn't include me in their server before the 26th of September!!! I need to wait a whole week. So in the mean time I ripped out the 2nd NIC, put my modem back in, dumped everything back in the box and dumped that box in a deep dark closet.

All my ISP needs to do is insert my name and password in their server, but that is too difficult, it seems...
Almost sounds like AOL, huh?

Okay, got it up and running. Although I had to threaten to send them back their package and change ISPs before I got a direct IP address

So, did I test? I tested. At dslreports I got the very weird speed reading of upload = 196kbps against downloads = 82kbps.

Not very reliable there then

I have downloaded the Return to Wolfenstein Castle demo in 22 minutes though, with a speed of around 50kbps.

Probably some things to tweak here, amongst which the stupid internet connection sharing, through a router though.
