New Via 4in1 drivers (4.36)

Available here. Anyone tried 'em yet? I don't want to be the first

NEW 4in1 drivers, version 4.36: An updated 4in1 service pack has just been released on the Drivers Page. This includes the new and improved IDE driver version 1.20. It also includes a silent installation of a patch which adjusts a memory setting in BIOS on some VIA Apollo chipsets to ensure stability with the latest video drivers under all Windows Operating Systems.

Funny, I've never had any problems with 4in1's with either of my 2 Via boards (Asus P3V4X and my recently aquired A7V266-E).

Oh, pfft! The 4-in-1's are known troublemakers. The caveat here is, of course, that I run Windows XP. DO NOT INSTALL THE 4-in-1's ON WINDOWS XP. You have been warned.

These four in ones contain a possible fix for the infinite loop problem with nvidea cards.
Looking at Via Arena however shows that these patches don't seem to work in many cases.

Sorry forgot to mention they'll probably hose your system.

I have installed these new 4in1 in WinXP, they only add an updated inf. and IDE drivers. Earlier versions weren´t meant for XP.

No probs here, I mean no probs related to the 4in1.
XP is a bad dog and I really prefer Win98SE, which is much easier to handle when problems occur (and they do also in XP).

I haven´t ried them in win98 yet since I have no reason. The version that came with my excellent Soltek mobo have proved to be very stable indeed.

That fix for the GeForce cards can be done manually via WPCREDIT and WPCRSET, or if you have a responsible and intelligent motherboard manufacturer, you'll find it in your latest BIOS update (MSI has patched all their boards... hehe).

Seems a bit odd that mobo manufacturers have to update their Bios because Nvidia made a bobo in their latest drivers.

Ive heard somewhere that the largest cause of motherboard returns is due to bad BIOS flashes. I would find it VERY odd if a manufacturer would risk a RMA just to take the heat of nvidia.

Theres a bug/feature in the Via chipset that shows itself up under heavy loading. To "cure" the problem a register value has to be changed to switch this feature off. It's better to fix this in the bios than using software patches.
It seems to effect Nvidea mostly but one or two have reported problems with Ati cards and I mean one or two.
Something in the later drivers, 12.xx seem to work apparently as do the XP drivers, seem to cause XP operating systems to fall over.

nVidia decided to "speed up" their newer drivers, by taking advantage of a particular timing routine. Well, unfortunately, this timing routine stuffs up VIA chipsets. So you take a 5% speed hit but you turn off this timing routine via BIOS registers. *shrug*
