I'm a believer in never letting the HD spin down. Docking the heads, and restarting, usually causes more wear than just letting it run. Letting it run does consume more power though. They may have gotten better about this, but until I hear for sure, my HDs don't spin down except for when the computer goes off.

I've never bother to ask the applications how they feel about me shutting off the computer at the end of the day. The seem to be OK with it when I start the computer in the morning.
When my work computer is on, the hard drives stay spinning, no power management, but I do let the computer rest for 16hours by turning off the power when it's not in use.Alcohol and Drugs make life tolerable.Comment

DirtFarmer, I'm in complete agreement with Wombat, but I admit that I don't keep my computer running 24 hours a day any more. I turn it on in the morning and I turn it off when I go to bed. I use no power management so my five drives spin non-stop all day. The point I was making earlier was basically aimed at those people who either are constantly turning their computers on and off all day, or who are allowing their power management settings to turn their computers and/or drives on and off all day. I would think that these are the people who are having the greatest number of problems with drive failures (not withstanding those who allow their drives to cook).Comment

Purchased 2 DiamondMax D740X-L FluidB 40 GB drives. For the 1-month anniversary, one of the drives today said a loud "click" and went belly down. There goes my RAID 0 array... Oh, joy.Comment

I have never had any of my hardrives go on me
Also I get my HDD to spin down after an hour of inactivity.
well maybe 1, I got a a scsi seagate from work cheap, it did not actually fail just timed out a lot, it was probably dodgy to begin with, but I got it exchanged anyway.
3 scsi IBM's, 6 seagate scsis, a WD, and a few 3 or 4 quantums...and counting
And currently 2 of the dreaded 40G 60GXP's and one WD 80G.
Probably luck and I never let them get to hot.Comment
