no offense, but considering it is a Mac review site i really don't trust any product comparison coming from them. so what if OSX really is better, that review is pretty poor.

they even go into UI inconsistancies in Office XP and call them flaws in Windows XP.

Apple's icons just keep shrinking to fit into the space, while XP relegates extra apps to a second or even third row of the taskbar, accessible via up and down arrows. I've lost lots of seconds clicking up and down through those arrows looking for apps I wanted to access.
did they even install Windows XP? Windows XP by default collapses icons down into a single stack.

    or...

XP: PC Users have no equivalent to Key Caps. They must use the Character Map application to type most 'high-ascii' characters, or remember their 3 digit numeric value and type them in on their numeric keypad.
wouldn't it have been simpler hitting the copy button?

so many of the flaws they find in Windows XP occur in other products, or are simply problems due to the intelligence of the reviewer...

here is a gem proving this point..

Start Menu can only display My Computer as a link OR as a menu, not both.

      or...

      there is always this one...

XP: If automatic login is turned off, XP displays Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to login with a brief sentence, "This makes your computer more secure". XP's Ctrl-Alt-Del sequence is guaranteed to always bring you to THE official Windows login screen.
      what a maroon.

Actually, Since the days of the WinNT4.0 I never figured why did I have to press the Ctrl-Alt-Del to login, couldn't they just start with that window ?

I think it was M$ way to show off like they "Tamed" the Ctrl-Alt-Del, no more reboot sequence, now WE control it !

Under Windows 2000 by default the login screen comes up. You have to set an option to enable the CTRL-ALT-DEL at startup.

I think MS did it primarily as an easy way to lock your workstation when unattended. It also has the bonus that 'expert' users cant give their machine the three finger salute quite so easily.

hm... CTRL-ALT-DEL don't come up on default installs of XP either

Teh CTRL+ALT+DEL is there to make sure the person has been logged on localy from keyboard attached to the machine since there is no way to simulate CTRL+ALT+DEL interrupt remotely.

This can be turned on in XP but your security is more vulnerable.

If you don't like teh WINNT screen when presented with CTRL+ALT+DEL you can do this.

rename winnt256.bmp in the systemdrive\WINNT folder to something else (winnt256.bak)

copy your wallpaper (in .bmp) to \WINNT and rename it to winnt256.bmp

              Set your wallpaper to winnt256.bmp

                UtwigMU:

You are right - the ctrl-alt-del sequence is a security requirement, however it is possible to send a simulated version - I do it with new-support - but the net support client must be loaded on the target PC.

ctrl-alt-del was there as the key combination will (normally) terminate an application. This provides a simple, but effective, defense against password capture apps(remember they old days of dos- how many sturdents at uni captured classmates passwords with a simple password capture program for Novell... you could write one in a couple of dozen lines!).

                The ctrl-alt-del avoids this pain
                Regards

Interface design of that review (after 1 page): 0/10

Where's that "Next Page" button? Oh, I have to click on the drop down menu, and choose the topic I want - so I look back up the page to see my current topic, and choose the next one. D'oh...

Edit: Going to give up pointing out the errors now, the Drag n Drop page is here

Action: Drag image from a web page onto your desktop.
OS 10.2: Copies the image onto your desktop. The image (in ghosted form) drags with the mouse to indicate the action that is about to occur.
WinXP: Behavior varies. If the image is enclose w/in a hyperlink, a shortcut to the hyperlink is dragged to the desktop. Otherwise, the image is copied to the desktop.
Notes: Web developers dragging images from web pages are most likely trying to copy the image, therefore creating a shortcut is less useful.

What gives him the right to decide everyone is a web developer? And, er, who would really save an image that way anyway? If I ever drag something from IE, it's almost always to create a link - drag the 'E' document icon from the Address bar - creates a link. Drag hyperlinked text into the favourites menu bar...creates a link! Sheesh

                  Me done with that review.

                  P.

My neighbour Davey uses Mac's/OS X for his work with Illistrator and Photochop. He complains about the crap inconsistancies and bugginess of the OS X. But due to his slack-a-tude will not try to use a windows machine (his home PC runs Win2k) for such work (relearning shortcuts and all)

Complains about his mothers system having gazillions of links/shortcuts on the Desktop in Win2k, but then again doesn't show her how to make a folder to put them in.

Some people have their mind firmly cemented in the sand whining about the simplest of things. Me thinks they should all have a long look in the mirror and shut the F*ck up til they have the competence to know how bloody anal they truely are.

In Windows 2000 and XP the only time that the system itself enabled Control-Alt-Delete is if you have it set up to participate in a domain, something that the reviewer would not be setting his Mac up to do. Windows 2000 does give you the option to enable Control-Alt-Del for statup security reasons, Windows XP does NOT, even if you disable fast user switching and revert to the classic login.

the guy is obviously a long time Mac user as many of the things he complains about on the PC side really come down to "they do things different then a Mac, so the Mac wins".

i still think that he didn't acctually install Windows XP. not a clean install at least. i would also love to see what hardware he installed it on.

Actually MacOS is very easy to use in contrary to windows and it is much more transparent to the knowledgable user.
Unfortunately with MacOs X it seems even more bloated and even slower than windows, so it's not really an OS i would like.

I came into "contact" with a MAC years before I got a PC and ther is no "magical" userfriendlines with them!

And after repairing both PC and Mac's for a couple of years now I can definitly say that Mac users are as frustrated at their Mac's as any PC owner is at their PC's!!

The only differenc is that A mac user amlost always say something along these lines:
"Well, it still works better than a PC with windows"
And usualy it is delivered in conjuntion with " I have never used a PC"

Its like they all are suffering from some complex!

Thats why I try to never ever ever say any of the words "PC" "Windows" etc etc
Because they can revert to MACfanatics faster than you can say "PC"
If there's artificial intelligence, there's bound to be some artificial stupidity.
