I'll now install WinXP - anything I should know?

I have decided to give XP pro a try - mainly because of NTFS.

Is there anything I should know beforehand, any Tools that would be useful, etc?

The system would be mostly used for gaming, surfing, and capturing Video.

Specs:

- ECS K7S5A
- Duron 750
- 256 MB DDR
- Kyro II
- Terratec i512 cheap PCI sound card (soon to be an SB Live!, thanks Indiana )
- Hauppauge WinTV PCI-FM (bt878)
- 40 GB IBM 60GXP
- Sony 8x CDRW
- LG 1860B DVD

Keep an mirror image of your hdd backed up, just in case you regret upgrading! (if you can call it upgrading)

Seriously though, make sure that all your peripherals will work in xp and make sure all your appz will work in xp.

XP is a good OS. It is rock stable and is nice to use.
Things to know about it:
- it loves RAM ! 256Mb is good but more is always better...
- it has built in spyware ! use adaware and xpantispy to remove them.
- it takes 1,5Gb on your HDD.
- it sitll needs some tweaking, use tweakXP to improve things.

Just some tips:

- Use SiS agp driver 1.09 or higher. Use XP native SiS IDE drivers - DO NOT install SiS ones.

- Disable automatic updates and be sure remote assistence and remote desktop are also disabled.

- Decide if you want to disable system restore. It can be resource consuming and intrusive, but if you enable it only for the OS partition, believe me it´ll don´t bother you much and it´ll save you a couple of reinstalls if you screw up. I hate to say it, but it´s really usefull

- Disable all the visual effects you can. Be sure to use the "win2k" desktop. The KyroII just doesn´t have enough 2D functions to properly accelerate winXP. I figured it out when I installed the Ti4400. I blamed the window/menus/scrolling slugginess at the bloated OS, but with the geforce it suddenly was very very smooth even with all the visual effects on.

- Enable XP firewall for your internet connection. It works.

Why are you using the Win98SE machine as a server - any particular reason? If possible, switch that over to WinXP (or Linux if it's just a modem sharer ).

And if you only want NTFS, there's a better suited OS out there - called Win2000

XP is working great here. I had to go XP for Parhelia, otherwise I was happy with 98SE. But the extra stability is nice, and you can turn off/rip out the annoying stuff.

Pace, it's my GirlFriend's machine (the server), and she "likes" Win98SE - she understands it, and it's sufficient for her needs. She is (understandably) a bit reluctant to use new software (or reinstall the whole OS) when the software she uses does what she needs
