No one's going to build it... how would you increase the areal density from this absolute minimum? Hard drive makers need planned obsolescence too..
It's a cool idea though.. you could build a completely enclosed RAID in a single drive to combat the delicacy of data. Each platter could be a separate RAID disc..Last edited by KvHagedorn; 10 September 2002, 21:52. -
a shame each drive would need a tunnelling, electron microscope, in order to read the data
still, it's a nice thought, which is what counts, right? (Tom Pabst may disagree on the 'nice thought' part)

I got a really big hard-drive. It takes up two 5,25" slots.
It's from 1983 and the capacity is only 4Mb.Comment

Hah! It's not a big drive unless it has 8" platters :PGigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.Comment

How about the storage units of the old IBM 305 RAMAC's? They had fifty 24" platters and stored a whopping 5 MB.
I believe they only cost $35,000/year to lease back in 1957
