Me and some of my mates (if I can call him that) are thinking about toying with VPN.

Are there any pitfalls to be aware of?
any requirements, such as a server OS?

I have a linux box that could host the connection.
Does anyone have any good resources or a knowledge base?

If you want to use a Linux box as a server, go and look up PopTop and see if it's what you want.

Freeswan's also supposed to be not very well-written, which is why it hasn't gone into the mainstream kernel.

My work uses CheckPoint's VPN-1 - same people who make Firewall-1

Works great - no config on my end apart from user id/password and IP of server. No idea what the other (server) end's like though. Very secure though!

Doesn't Win2k & XP have VPN wizards?

Doubtful. VPN is all about making your computer part of another network, not your own.
