I just picked one of these up at the local Staples today...I can't wait to start playing It is a re-badged Pioneer DVR-A05 (4x dvd-r), which has gotten positive reviews on the web. Regular price 299.99....instore discounted to 239.99 this week. On top of that, theres a $50.00 mail-in rebate. To knock the price down to $159.99....I used this coupon to get an additional 30.00 off instore:

Problem is that most people want/need +R/+RW for their DVD players to handle it.

On that note, Dell online has a wicked price reduction on their rebadged NEC 1100A. 4x2x12 (+r, +rw, read) with 16x cd burn... $225, and that's before free shipping and any other promo coupons you can find.

Why do you need +R for DVD players? I have burned home movies on DVD-R and they play in Toshiba, Panasonic and Sony players fine... I think the only problem is that -R can not have variable bitrate but +R can?

+R seems to be generally more readable.

+R has a bigger compatibility list. My player (Pioneer) plays -R just fine, but then again it plays EVERYTHING.

Many Sony players will only play +R or +RW.

Sony's DRU-500A is the way to go (if you actually get your hands on one that is...):

DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, CD-R/RW 24x....

Actually there's a new firmware update to allow the NEC 1100A to burn -R as well. Given the price, it's a more and more attractive alternative to the not-so-easy-to-get Sony.

Where can I d/l this firmware and will it work with rebadged drives like the Verbatims?

I'll find out. My next-door-neighbor bought a Dell NEC 1090A (rebadged 1100A, easily flashable to retail) and got the firmware from somewhere. I'll get it for you and post it.

P.S. As to whether it will work on the Verbatim drive... if you can flash it to retail, you can flash it to this.

Once the IRS cooperates by sending our refund back I'm getting the Panasonic burner that supports DVD-RAM. This is because a lot of editing software, starting with MSPro7 and VideoStudio7, will be supporting it for use in DVD-VR decks and for on-disk editing.

As far as DVD+R/RW goes some recent articles call into question just how "compatable" it really is. The "King" may well have no clothes....

actually i guess it depends on what media you are going for. i dunno but either one of the media will approch a dead end eventually.

Only problem is +R/+RW medias are costing so much... but if i am to buy a dvd burner right now i think i will stick with + medias.

btw the plextor looks good. and probably costs a lot for the plextor quality.

(damn stupid maxtor plextor and matrox. typos... lol)
