Windows wont update :(

I have thrown a fresh install of XP onto a new HD but I cant get the windows update site to work. It keeps asking me to update my 'updater software'. I click yes at the security warning, but it just loops back to the start

I have not seen this before. Any ideas?

..If it is one of the known pirated keys you used for the installation, I would not be surprised if this is microsoft making life hard for you..
Everything they offer on the update site, you can download and install manually.. yes it is a pain, compared to the update site, but it will get you up and running.

I still keep the more common updates, such as servicepack 1 on my HDD, just so I can update without downloading it all again

Any reboots in there? Usually when MS updates the updater, you need a reboot before it kicks in.

Whenever you have trouble with WIndows Update you should clear the Internet cache. It can be tempermental at times on any O.S. Or it could just be their site.

THe number of updates is not too bad on broadband but it can get irritating trying to keep up on a modem. Win98SE with I.E. 5.5 SP2 takes 13.9 MB. With a third of that being the new Java virtual machine. :^)

Actually, whenever the Windows Update server gets a bit busy, the entire process goes haywire. I really wish they had a "look the server is busy be patient or try again later" screen instead of just malfunctioning.
