    I've seen it at work.

    Some software enables active desktop and installs activeX controls that get started by default.

    Downloading processexplorer from sysinternals.com and deleting files used by weird processes helped.

      Together with Ad-Aware scans, I like using the new Google toolbar. It has popup blocking functions. It works great for the less invasive types.
