Reboot?

Ok, so a few weeks ago I built my friend a computer on an Epox 8rda+. It's running XP home. Unfortunately, she has AOL on it. She can double click on AOL, the program will load, and after about 3 seconds, the system reboots. Every time, without fail.

During one of the reboots, I went into the BIOS and disabled ACPI. Windows would load until the menu where you could choose "Start Windows Normally" or "Last known good configuration", etc. I'd make a selection, and then it would reboot. Ever time, without fail.

I re-enabled ACPI and it boots to Windows again. But now I'm just back where I started.

I didn't have much time to play around with it, but I didn't know if this was a known issue or not. Any ideas?

Is it definitely patched against blaster?

the usual steps are:

- uninstall the crap
- reinstall the crap
- hope

If she's using AOl 8, maybe there are some good tips here

AOL 9.0 is available if you can find someone else with an AOL account to use to download it. (not available on the website yet). You might also be able to find a CD somewhere, they are starting to trickle out.

That said, the standard gamut of driver issues must be asked. Chipset, video, sound, etc., I assume they are all up to date? Try setting some less agressive memory timings in the bios. Oh yeah, Service Packs and other good stuff up to date as well?

Thats all I can think of at the moment.

Yeah, i think she has gAyOL 8. Nice find, btw, I'll certainly give that a shot. I wanted to uninstall it last night, but i only had about 5 mins to click around...including reboot/diskchk times.

Yeah, it's pretty well updated. I built it with all the newest stuff I knew of about 3 or 4 weeks ago.

Put the AOL cd in the bin sign her up for another isp. AOL sucks donkeys balls. Download the patch for msblaster as it sounds like shes got it. Virus check the machine and download all the other patches shes never bothered about.

I don't think she has the blaster worm.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the other day, and it worked for a few days, but then it started doing the same thing again. Then she tried to uninstall AOL 8, and it wasn't even listed to Uninstall. WTF? She tried to install AOL 6, but it would lock during install. AOL=ghey.

Have you checked???? If you haven't patched you'll have either the nachi or the blaster worm or both. Infection can take about 5 seconds.

What checker should I use for the blaster worm or nachi?

I scanned her HDD w/ AVG antivirus and it came up clean.



PS-Anyone know a download site for AOL9?

Well I know in many cases Sophos doesn't detect nachi. There response was useless when informed of the problem. One of the reasons why many of our machines are infected.

Try stinger from http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

Remember to turn off system restore.

Are you sure you have disabled the auto restart for system failure to be certain you get the blue screen when it's a failure ?

Wasn't blaster supposed to pop up a window and give you a time warning that your PC would restart ?

I can double check that, but it didn't seem like it was doign a res change to the BSOD before reboot.

AFAIK, yes. That's why i think it doesn't have blaster.

I've seen machines with both blaster and nachi on showing no ill symptons at all. Or with blaster only and no reboots.
