So I'm working on a friend's PC...which i want to smash to bits.

I've reinstalled Win2k SP2 several times.

One of the times, despite the fact that it was a clean install, it got the Nachi virus (WTF?).

My main problem is that I'm trying to install a Leadtek Winfast TV 2000 XP Deluxe TV tuner card. When I go to install the drivers, it blue screens upon install, and will refuse to boot after that (unless I go into safe mode, then it MAY boot, depending). I get the "IRQL not equal" error. I've reset config data in the BIOS, PnP OS is set to "yes".

It's given me various other issues, but I think I've gotten rid of them. Oh yeah, and sometimes after you shut the PC down, it WILL NOT POST again, until you pull out the PC cards, put them all back in, and then boot it.

I have a hammer, and I know how to use it.

1. Download Antivirus updates and, patches on another machine and burn to CD.
2. Disconnect machines network cable.
3. Disconnect any additional hard drives.
4. Do a full format from a bootable CD on the main hard drive.
5. Also, replace the Master Boot Record.
6. Patch the machine from the CD and install the antivirus program and updates for that as well.
7. Turn off any unnecessary services especially the messenger service.
8. Reconnect any additional hard drives that may have been on the machine.
9. Scan them and then reconnect the network cable.

i'll try a format /mbr next, but i've scanned the entire drive and it comes up clean. that was w/ the NIC unplugged.

Did you patch from a CD as well as install an antivirus program and update that before reconnecting the NIC. If the virus is trying to get in and you reconnect the machine to the network before patching it will sneak in again.

She's clean of virii now, but it still dies whenever i force that driver to install. It seems to think that the "unknown multimedia device controller" it lists IS NOT the TV tuner card. And as soon as install the driver for it, it reboots on me.

I tried to install mobo drivers, but there are none listed on Iwill's site.

I can't remember exactly how I installed that damn driver, but it was an absolute pain. Are you talking about the X-Bar driver?

Also, are you sure the Virii is not on the media you are using? As opposed to on the system?

Yeah, it's virus free if i scan it now.

I can't get ANY of the drivers in.

Yeah, brain fart, it was fdisk /mbr


So anyway, I did that, reinstalled, and everything is kosher until i go to install the drivers for the TV card. It reboots and will never come back up (only in safe mode).

WHY?

Yeah, but she got this one because the old ATi one was buggy as hell.

Is it Win2k in ACPI mode or standard ?
Have you tryed different PCI slots ?

I tried diff PCI slots.
As for ACPI mode, I recall it being on. Ditto for APIC.

Why don't you Try SP4 instead ?

Try this:

Fresh install of Win2k
Install SP4
Install DirectX 9

Only then, install latest drivers.
It *might* work this way.
