    New Cpu

As you can see my cpu is starting to get a little tired for newer games and is holding my Radeon back.

I'm just not sure where to go ? .. Intel or AMD ?? I usually stick with AMD though I like the sound of the HT technology plus the 2.4 GHz p4 with HT is going for around £130 and the 2.8 is going for around £150, plus I hear they have a lot of clocking capability

    any recommendations or advice ??

I like the sound of HT too, only as in "HomeTheater".
If you do too, then go AMD way with Asus A7N8X - Deluxe and get true DD5.1 sound + other nice on-board features (2 nics, firewire etc.)

      - which is what I've just done along with a Barton 2500+. Smoothest install of a new mobo I've ever had. Everything just worked. And it's nice and quick too.

I'd go for a HT p4 and a board with gigabit ethernet connected via CSA.

          the P4's has crappy IPC
In normal wording : clock per clock a Athlon IS faster

unfortunatly AMDS PR system ****s things up

A amd athlon 2400+ is not as fast as a p4-2400 but a amd 2000mhz cpu is MUCH faster than a 2000mhz p4.

then there is also the thimg with SSE2

              you missunderstood me
I was more thinking of the fact that the P4 almost REQUIRES SSE2 to be "Fast"

You need gigabit ethernet at home because....

because 100 Mbit is slooooow when copying over all those DivX movies and DVD-R images of 'backups'.

Well, since I don't live alone I'd send gigabytes of digital pictures, movies (both hollywood and our daughter's DV caps) between my and my girlfriend's PC, and of course the occasional music etc.

The XP2500+ is CHEAP and most people claim to be able to get 3200+ speeds out of them. Did you try overclocking, GNEP?

I agree with everything Technoid said - however, the P4 does seem to be stronger for gaming, especially with an 800MHz bus.
