USB root hub problem - can't load driver!??

I recently bought my girlfriend a webcam, but when time came to install we discovered that there was a problem with the "USB root hub".

When checking the windows device manager we see the little exclamation mark thingie and the error reads

The NTKERN.VXD device loader(s) for this device could not load the device driver. (Code 2)

To fix this, click Update Driver to update the device driver.

We have tried to update the driver with the (same) windows driver.... No luck.

We have downloaded the latest drivers for the motherboard and installed those.... still no luck, and it looks as if they weren't installed at all since the date on the driver is still 1999 and by Microsoft.

We took it to the shop and all they did was reinstall windows (or so they said) to no avail.

The BIOS has been set to assign an IRQ to the USB, and it is set to choose one automatically.

I'm at my wits end here. I have absolutely no clue what to do next.... any help would be greatly appreciated.

- Motherboard is a Soyo SY-6BA+III
- OS is Windows 98 SE, running on 64 MB ram (if that's of any relevance)

Have you tried updating manually ??
Unpack the drivers and then point windoze to the folder???

hmm, try removing everything under usb while in safe mode in device manager then reboot & see what happens

Huh? NTKERN on 98? I haven't played with 98 in a while, but I didn't think it has any NTKERN?

Pit - Not sure how I'd go about that cause the drivers come as a setup file.

Ayoub - Tried doing as you suggested but it still gives the same error

Just a single setup file or is there some other folders saying win9x or win98??? If they are the files you need maybe in there.
Even so it's got to be extracting the files somewhere. Have you looked into the temp folder??

It's just one single setup file.

We tried to do as described in the links but that didn't seem to help the problem.

I'll try fooling around with it some more, but ideas are still welcome

Have removed all the usb devices as suggested and let windoze redetect them without the web cam in. Then check the device manager.
It also woth resetting the plug and play options in your bios.
Have you also installed the latest drivers for your motherboard. Check the website.
Empty your temp folder and check in there after the install for any new folders. These maybe your web cam drivers.

Are you using any other USB devices.... Have you used any?

And for the temp folder thing TP has mentioned... some programs remove their setup folder after a installing so another way is to run the installer... leave it open after it "Prepares to setup" then when it starts prompting you for input... look in the temp folder... it should be in there. (Had to do it for a logitech webcam once...) but it seems like your problem is with the root hub and not the device.

She doesn't have any other USB devices, and actually she doesn't have the webcam anymore either. She returned it. But guess either way the USB root hub should be working.

She has had a digital camera connected at one point though.

What USB version is the motherboard / PCI card and the hub -
1.0 / 1.1 / 2.0 ?

Old implementations of the USB such as on my Asus P2B-DS (old revision) are shitty so they don't accept lot's of hardware such as disk-on-keys (usb 1.1) etc.

Have you tried removing the drivers for Digital camera as they mave wriiten in thier own usb drivers.
