What happened to JPEG 2000?

Wasnt it supposed to replace the standard JPEG format a while back? I remember reading about it about 2 or 3 years ago, and it seemed like it would just replace the old JPEG in smooth transition.

What happened? Patent problems, not accepted, not ready, already there?

Already there - there are plugins, etc. Don't know why it didn't take off - probably because no browser supports it natively, which is probably because IE doesn't.

I don't think JPEG2000 is encumbered by patents. Actually, the opposite is true - people have patents on DCT they're threatening to use. JPEG2000 uses wavelet compression.

The prime reasons seem to be that:
1) JPEG2000 is much more CPU intensive.
2) It's not superior to standard JPEG in every way, it's got situations where it looks much worse than the DCT methods.

With everyone now using broadband and 200gb hard drives, the tiff format should now be standard, so we could have better quality images.

That's the thing, it's not everyone. It's not even half of American internet users.

Plus, as an occasional content provider, I have neither the space nor the bandwidth limits for TIFFs.

It's even worse in the UK apply as only 25 - 30% of the actual internet users are broadband.

I know that 'apt-get install libjasper-1.700-2' will install the jasper library, though the damn dev package is currently broken in Debian Sid.

It is out there, I have so far seen one program that uses it. GYachE, which is a Yahoo client for Linux that supports Yahoo's webcam and voice features. It requires jasper (Jpeg 2000) to work properly.

I haven't gotten it to compile yet, because of that damn dev issue... that and GYachE says it should use a patched version of the jasper library... ick, oh well, eventually I'll try it again, just ran out of time and patience last time....
