Freescale Semiconductors, a Motorola spin-off, has made a single chip solution to provide broadband internet. The chip would allow ISP's, phone and cable companies (etc) to provide 45 Mb/s internet access via fiber optics for cheap

Nah, Sasq has something better (100Mb fiber). Japanese grandmas have something similar.

But I read on Ars that SBC will start offering fiber. Of course it will be at first for only densely populated areas, but don't despair.

Maybe there it's cheap. 45 Mb/s fiber here (minus laying the fiber) is still very expensive. At least from the telecoms, because they don't want to offer a cheaper solution to their high-profit T1/DSL services.

cost of laying fiber to each home is just too high for this to be profitable at this point.. especially since DSL tech is still evolving so soon much higher speeds can be reached through plain copper wires that everyone already has

Nope, that much bandwidth is still expensive here. Unless a small ISP that has nothing to do with a US telecom is providing it, it's going to run into the hundreds of dollars per month, if not more. Just the way the US market is right now.

Doesn't mean it will always be like that...

It's not because they *charge* you insane prices that it *costs* that much. It's because there aren't enough customers to warrant a price decrease (and/or total lack of competition).

They've been laying fiber in the Detroit area for several years. Our neighborhood is already fiber to the main distribution box, so we should get it pretty soon after it's released.

The best example is Sweden. They have a very new network in the most populated areas. You get 10/10Mbit for about $50/month. I hink 100/100Mbit was 200$, but don't quote me on that. If you're not lucky, you just get VDSL at 12down/9up, still for about $50. And if you live out in the woods, just get satellite +56K

A stupid SDSL 2/2Mbits costs about 1000$/month here -not counting installation cost...
