characters in private use area of uni code problem

I installed a phonetic font from Adobe and encountered this problem: All the characters assigned and displayed in the "private use area" cannot be used (select, copy...). They are shown as small squares when selected or copied. Fonts from microsoft seem not to have the same problem. Any one knows a solution?

I'm guessing that the font needs to be installed for general use or in toher words needs to be installed for Windows in general and not just the Adobe private use area.

"Private use area" is the area in Uni Code character set. The font was installed for the system as all other fonts.
