Can it connect to normal windows shares, or does it require some kind of software to be installed on the server?
Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. Bastard coated bastards with bastard filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive, bubble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine. -- Dr. Perry Cox

they seem to mention a uPnp media server, whatever that is.

sadly only mp3/wma - if it could play FLAC, I would buy it asap.

Yes, you need a universal PNP server software, which is available for all platforms, including OSX and Linux. Musicmatch Jukebox, Nero 6 Reloaded mediaserver, Twonkyvision are some uPNP servers (Twonkyvision is quite small, I hear, and from Fraunhofer). I heard ogg support may come in the future.
