Is it possible to connect two WiFi cards (eg one in a laptop as a pcmcia device, the second in a desktop, as a pci card) directly, without a hub?

I tried once, with a Toshiba Tecra Win2k laptop (builtin wifi adaptor) and a Belkin USB wifi connector on an XP Pro desktop.
I did get them to see each other, but that was about as far as I got. Shares and browsing both failed.
Never had a problem getting things to work via hubs though. I have had issues with WEP in XP SP2, but WPA works just fine.FT.Comment

ad hoc doesn't always work with different brands. WPA compliant adapters (in WPA mode) might be better at it since the interoperability has been improved since the WEP days.Comment
