Looks like the designers don't see it being any cheaper than $200-300. Still I wouldn't mind one IF it's sturdy and lasts awhile. From what this interview says... could be that it is
Wikipedia and Google.... the needles to my tangent habit.

Perhaps some future spin-offs of the idea based on electronic paper would be cheaper (and also: they keys could be, uhmm...not flat)

Possibly ready for production in '06 ?

Probably still speculative, but still its a great idea. I just wonder if the keys will be curved like normal keys are, or flat like it looks now. Its kinda hard to judge from the photos.

with some luck, other manufactures will try this too, driving the price down

as for the keys being flat, well all they need to do is add a transparent "regular" key on top of the one they have to give the same feel as a regular keyboard

Yes, but that will change the optics quite a bit. Humans generally don't like trying to read concave surfaces, especially from an angle.

I also don't like the Enter key. But it LOOKS very cool.

Looks like the keyboard may come out Feb. 1st

Patent controversy or no patent controversy, it appears that Russia's Art Lebedev Studio is pushing forward with its plans to introduce their new buzz-crazy Optimus Keyboard on February 1st. They're a little oblique about what exactly they're introducing -- their site now says "Good Things Come in Small Packages -- February 1, 2006". To jog your memory, the Optimus is that keyboard where each key has a customizable mini OLED display that allows you to tailor the layout -- with color graphics, if you'd like -- so that it's optimized for use with different applications. Still not entirely sure that they'll be able to pull it off (at a price that real people can afford), but we'll have our credit cards primed on February 1st. [Thanks to everyone who sent this one in]

Pretty sure we could all pitch in and split the keys between us

If a full-size model ever sees the light of day, one of the key selling points for me would be if switching between layouts was quick and easy. Not so much for switching between languages or even for different applications, but rather when sharing it between a Mac and a Win/Nix PC.

I use a Japanese language keyboard on my iBook (yes it has English and Roman characters on it) and, using a software KVM, I share it with a PC that dual boots between English and Japanese versions of Windows as well as Linux. So a quick and easy toggle would be great if I wanted to maintain the same basic setup (in terms of the keyboard layouts) using something like the Optimus.
