Bad Splitter

About every 2-3 days I'd get disconnected from the internet. After some time troubleshooting, I figured out the only way to fix the problem was to reboot the cable modem. Well, after 4 weeks or so of this happening, I got fed up and called Comcast. They came over and found the problem. My splitter was literally deteriorating away. Check these pics out:

It would seem that way. Actually, this splitter was underneath my house. It is very dry under there(no moisture), so the tech concluded it was due to the splitter sitting on the ground and electrlysis? I have to believe him becasue I have no idea.

Soda is what I've used to clean desposits off my car battery leads when I've had to do that. It's almost perfect with just 20 seconds of pouring effort.

Impressive.

Was having the same type of issues and TW came out and buried a new cable to the house and replaced all the splitters. They even put a little protective box over the exterior housing (though I suspect that's more to keep us from going back to satellite than to protect the equipment).

sounds awfully expensive for a splitter.. how about just using a regular splitter indoors?

Not really. Not when you are wiring a new home or significant remodel where wallboard has been removed. The box itself is less than $100, and home runs of cat5e phone and ethernet plus all RG6 cables are run here. Feeds go from here to the side of the house. All phones can be connected to whatever line this way, either DSL or cable modems can be hooked to a router and then out to the house ethernet jacks. Everything is indoors, and there is electrical here for anything that requires power (not a good idea outside).

That would be the same model sold in the home depot.. pretty - yes, but for ethernet it is a 10 base T hub they sell you for like $100CDN.. I forget the price for the RG6 splitter but it is pretty pricy too..it just seems overly expensive for what it is.

Did a little bit of research on google and it does seem like a die-cast piece made of zinc.
