Moving picture on HP 24" LCD through DVI on new computer

Guy replaced his older P4 based notebook with DVI dock with new HP nx9420 notebook, also with DVI dock.

Before he was using his old notebook with closed lid and external display connected to DVI as only display at default 1920x1200 resolution. Everything worked.

With new notebook, he wanted to have dual monitor setup. I connected the monitor to DVI port of HP dock, enabled independent dual display and extended picture. The card in new notebook is Radeon x1600.

The picture started moving left and right about 2-3 times a second. 1920x1200 is the limit of DVI connection, I also tried lower resolutions but result was still the same - moving picture.

I tried changing to alternative DVI setting in Catalyst Control center, I tried reducing frequency to 59Hz but it didn't help.

I will have to troubleshoot, solve this problem sometime during next week. What else can I try. Also this is the type of client that looks over your shoulder and asks questions all the time.

Preferably I need to solve this at his location, I wouldn't like bringing in the monitor, notebook and dock in for troubleshooting.

How about just stretching the desktop ?

Possibly either a faulty docking port or dodgy drivers.

Those are only supposed to go every hour, and the only shift one pixel.

What OS?

What driver version?

Have you installed the monitor driver?

My 22in monitor does this a lot on the KVM switch.
It shudders to the right, and then to the left, all the time.

Try to find how the DVI signal is translated through the dock.
I would try the external screen directly connected to the laptop if possible, and see if the same problem occurs.

I'm going there tomorrow.

The monitor has 2 DVI ports, the laptop despite being a lapzilla with full numeric keyboard only has a D-SUB.

Problem is older laptop worked through dock, the new one doesn't.

Sounds like its just a problem with the DVI transmitter in the dock, or the dock interface on the laptop. Most likely the dock though... they're generally made pretty cheap.

Guy solved problem himself, he swapped external display for primary monitor, which made the moving go away.
