Can't logon?

The windows 2000 install on my sisters computer has gone wonky.

At the logon prompt it throws up an error message that it can't reach the domain (and says that the domain is named the same thing that the computer name).

She says she got a Yes/No prompt but she ofcourse didn't read what it said so no help there..

Normally on w2k computers that IS networked you get to chose domain or local but I dont get this here, just the plain vanilla logon prompt.

I tried to search on google but apparently I don't know the right terminology for it to direct me to the right ms kb articles

Do anybody have any idea of what's going on?

Try to login with different username. 'Administrator' maybe?

Try safe mode.

This works like a champ on Windows 2000 to reset the administrator password:

It's a boot disk, floppy or CD, that loads a small Linux kernel that can crack the SAM table. It works best if you set the admin password to blank rather than to an actual password. Once done, choose the options to save the changes, reboot and off you go.

Since it was because of harddrive sector failure safe mode didnt change a thing

It is a great tool. I haven't used it in a long while though since I don't do desktop support anymore. You can try booting to something like UBCD4win and run "CHKDSK c: /x /r" to repair the drive, then ntpasswd to fix the SAM.

Well after I used Spinriteâ„¢ nothing else was needed, the original weird logon problem wasnt because we didnt have the password, it was because windows was borked due to sector failure on the hdd.

the problem was solved and the computer booted to the desktop when I posted the 18:02 message
