Need Suggestiong for BEST SS7

I need some help from the SS7 guru's around here. My brothers system finnaly died, at least the motherboard did. Everything else works fine, so i need a suggestion for a new, good SS7 motherboard. He's only got about $100 TOTAl to spend, so try to keep this in mind.
I suggested he just upgrade to a pII or a celeron, but he doesnt have the cash. thanx

My IWILL XA 100 worked fine with everything but my G400. I've heard the XA 100 Plus does fine with it though. I think they're both relatively cheap but I'm not sure.

I have been using P5BV3+ revB for about a year now. I've had a K62-333mhz and am now using a K6III 400mhz without any probs, also I have a G400 Max which runs without any probs.

Epox has made almost an art out of SS7 boards (well, OK, but among the top contenders). Go take a look at the EP-MVP3G5 motherboard 2mb L2 cache, UDMA 66, 1-agp, 5-Pci, 2-ISA, ATX factor.

If you need an AT board, look at the EP-MVP3C2.

If ya gotta do SS7, go with a VIA chipset.

I'm using an Iwill XA100plus, works fine with both G200 & G400.

EchoWars, I've seen lots of posts from people with SS7 boards which use VIA chipsets complaining but very few from those with ALi chipsets. I have had no problems with my ALi based board with both G200 and G400, with or without TurboGL, (G400 of course). I would therefore recommend ALi boards over VIA one.

Epox mvp3g2 or g5 both excellent boards,easy to configure and stable.
The g2 sells for under $100.00 and the g5 sells for a little over $100.00

I know this is a good board, as ive already installed 2 of them for other people. Just wanted to see what people were saying.

Now that I've said it, go buy the ASUS board, it's the best of the bunch. I still have random lockups with the Epox board, but not the ASUS.

Definitely Asus P5A. This is by far the least troublesome board. If you don't believe me, go read all of the reviews.

Helevitia, this is nonsens. The P5A is of course the least troublesome board under the ALI "powered" boards, but it is much better to go with a VIA based board. I'm a system-technician, so trust me, ALI is by far the worst choice!

PS: ALI based boards have much lesser memory throughput

WHAT???? I think you must live in another world! Everyone knows that ALI Boards are crap! There are MUCH more people who have to patch their crappy ASUS P5A Board (tell me, how many Bios Updates are there for the P5A?? 20?) than there are people who have a VIA Board.
With an ALI Board you have to disable all this funny things (AGP2x, Sidebanding, AGP Turbo Mode ect.). I've had an EPOX VIA Board (EP51MVP3-GM, one of the very best), and a friend of mine owned a P5A from ASUS. He was the one with the problems, not me. And here at work (our CD-Burner "works" with a GA5X from Gigabyte and ALI Chipset) we have the same probs.
And, don't take me wrong , i like Asus boards (actually i own a K7M). As written earlier the P5A was the best of all ALI Boards, but not as good as any VIA Based board.

So now, big question to ALL of you.
What is better, VIA or ALI????

I would have to agree with Gurm the ALi boards seem more stable than the VIA based ones. Just looking at the posts here confirms this. My Iwill XA100plus works fine with both G200 & G400 the later at AGP 2x and TurboGL. Intel used to make the best chipsets up until the BX but there latest efforts are less than perfect.

Let's not get into a big argument about who is more qualified than who after all it's mostly about personal experiences anyway!

I'm talking stable, trouble-free. Not performance. Yes, when 100% patched SOME of the VIA boards run better than the ALI boards.

However, I have an Epox MXV3-whateverthehell, and under Win2k it just spontaneously locks up. All the time. No matter what hardware I have on it. Can't fix it, set all BIOS settings to least aggressive. The ASUS just runs. Not as fast as lightning, but it runs. All the time.

And I don't mind BIOS updates - they are far more effective than "DRIVER" updates.
