mixing ram

i have 96mb 66mhz ram (1x64 & 1x32) in an old computer

i have a new stick of 64mb 100mhz

can i add the new ram to the older slower ram?

It should work, but...

1. You have to run all the RAM at the slower speed.

2. You have to run all the RAM at the slower CAS rating.

Some chips don't handle this very well. Give it a try and find out! It also has a lot to do with the motherboard. Worst-case scenario you might have to turn the memory timings all the way down. urk.

In addition to others, I have another suggestion: Put the slowest memory in the first memory slot. That is because the mobo always uses the memory timings of the first memory slot, so thats the safest way to go!

Ovi's suggestion presumes, of course, that your motherboard correctly labels the first motherboard slot. Not always the safest of assumptions, but...

I tried to mix 1 * 256mb (p-133) & 2 * 128mb (p-100) on my 66mhz pc and I kept getting errors.
The two 128s or 256 on their own worked a doddle.

Plug it an and run a memory benchmark for a few times, this should test if its stable.
