    Updating setup files.......

My system has started to give me this message about every other time I boot up, although I have installed nothing new lately. Any ideas?

Is there anything odd under system properties/devices after a boot into safe mode.

I ended up with the problem after a botched driver install for my soundcard... it would redetect the legacy soundblaster device ever boot... It turned out it never completely installed and thus never stuck

I could be way off... but it gives you a place to start.

Let me try that. I did disable dos support for my sound card round about the time this started. Maybe.........

Yes, check anything you installed or disabled as of lately (can be up to 4 weeks ago), and especially try to remember when your last crash was.

If Windows was installing something during a crash, it is possible that this setup message pops up way later than after the first reboot.

How many times a week do you reboot?

Actually, I have not had a crash for months...system is really stable.

It's my home system, so I typically boot up once, shut down once every day.

Did you check the registry for faults?

Check this FAQ for some options
