    Confusing Win98 bug.

This 'feature' that appeared to my Win98 a while ago is driving me crazy. But while I use W2000 as my main OS I did not discover this bug in 98 soon enough to tell what caused it. I suspect PD5.13 however.

The very annoying problem is that I cannot browse my files. By saying I cannot browse them mean that there's no way I can list my files in any directory in 98 anymore using methods that 98 offers!

To be more specific: When I double click 'My Computer' I'll see my HDD's and everything is normal. Right, but if I open any of those drivers I'll se nothing. Nothing.
No directories, no files. The status bar at the bottom of the windows tell the right amount of files I should be seeing..

Using explorer it's somewhat better while I can see directories, but still NO files!
Some programs, like Winamp, can list the files right tho. (when opening files from the program)

No files system is messed up; Scandisk reports no errors. Also using command prompt everything is normal.

God! This is killing me! Try to use Windows for a day without using any methods but command prompt in listing files.. And I've had it for days (maybe weeks) now.

Hide? No, I have 'show hidden and system files' on so I should see them even if I'd managed to.

Also I tried to hit the empty space in the window in case for a graphics driver failure, but the files aren't there. The only thing I have installed for 2 months to that 98 of mine are PD5.13 and ICQ. I removed ICQ yesterday, but it had no effect.

D'oh! I just realized that while I have 'details' mode on I should have tried others. That could have helped.. But I'm at work now so I'm not able to try it soon..

        So keep the solutions coming.

Nope, like I said above, I tried to hit 'air' randomly but there weren't files there..

              Buuri,

Could it be some secret flag in some parts of the filesystem (FAT32?) or system file (or file table?) that was meant for "future" OSes but was used by W2K and that Win98 partially understood the flag?

So, uhm, W2K did some thingamajig to the flag/file/whatever, and Win98 went nuts-o?

              It's a CONSPIRACY, I tell you.

Seriously, I do believe W2K may be the cause of this thing. Of course, it could be some settings that went berzerko.

Good luck! I will watching this thread to arm myself for the possibility this bug turning up on my side.

              JamesA.

That's not so long shot at all James. It crossed my mind too. After all I'm using beta OS here..
But then again it doesn't explain why programs can list files. They are using OS services for that you know.

This is going to sound really stupid, but you might look up at the top of any explorer window. See if you have the fields displayed (name, type, etc.) I've broke explorer (2 pane) before, and there were no files displayed in the right pane...drove me nuts for a while. Go to the right edge of the screen and 'drag' over the separator line, and you'll see the files.

Don't cry into your mop, Buuri, you'll get spooge all over your face...(and that would be bad... I think...)!

Come to the party instead! Congratulations on 200 posts (on this account)... and over 1000 total!!! Hurrah!!!

I wouldn't drink anything Jorden suggests though.. from my experience, you might wake up tomorrow in a very compromising position... with photos involving you... and SteveC , you'd be amazed at what you can get Steve to do for a buck or 2 ... It could get ugly, just avoid the whole thing, I say...
