I don't but I remember an Urban Legend about Lara Croft and tomb raider that went along the render NUDE lines...

Man, do i wish i was under that NDA....

Personally, i think that NVidia buying 3dfx out has left lots of ex-3dfx employees disgruntled at nvidia - including engineers. I do also believe that many of them are not fans of ATI (who is?) and may be looking for a 3rd option... if Matrox could pick up some of those engineers, etc from 3dfx, they could place themselves in a very good position to be a good rival.

              And yes, the render nude feature will 0wn j00! h4r h4r h4r!

              err, yah.

Does the NDA keep you from telling us if we can expect an announcement about the G800 within the next 6 months? I've been waiting over a year for it now, and all I want is to hear an announcement. Features, based on what we've heard include hardware T&L, it won't be a G450 based chip, and that's all we REALLY know. The rest is speculation, but the thought of getting a Nvidia based card makes me ill. I don't CARE about Quake framerates!

there have been rumours about Matrox announcing their next-gen card at GDC in March, and just by coincedence, the G400 was announced at GDC 98, and GDC is listed as an upcoming event on the matrox site?

Targon, our NDA is so tight we can't even say if there's definitely going to be a G800 or not, like ever.... but I will say that I won't be giving up on Matrox just yet.

I would not doubt that Matrox has alot coming - they always find a way to keep current w/ the market and even ahead of it for a while. It looks to be that they have some real talent working inside, and usually are ahead of the curve with feature sets - look how long it took for the competition to implement bump mapping and dual head.

3DFX had rumours of specs for something called Rampage, NV20 killer, etc, etc, where are they now? Nowhere.

                            Himself,

3DFX pretty much killed themselfs, I was reading on some other website about 3dfx and John Carmacks comments conferm this that the product known as Rampage was supposed to be out after the Voodoo 2! They where saying that feature creap was the killer on this product and they never tightened down their belt to stop it so the could do a tape out and produce it. Also 3dfx was supposed to have a totally new product out in March that was called ghost and was to go agaist the NV20 that is going to come out in the spring.

Ok, with all this speculation going on, I thought I'd finally stop lurking and post my thoughts...

Supposing that Matrox does want or need a chunk of the gaming market, it seems to me that the way they appear to be handling the G800 is the only logical way to do it. Releasing a product that only incrementally improves upon the previous generation would be pointless from Matrox's position. That's something only the established leaders can get away with. If Matrox was to re-enter the gaming market they'd have to one-up the competition and surprise the entire market in doing so. This would be the only way for them to carve out a piece of the market for themselves. I know that there are loyal Matrox buyers, myself included, but let's face it, that doesn't make for much of a market. Surely not enough to justify the R&D and software development costs.

This is why it has been two years since a gaming-oriented card was released. They had to skip a product cycle in the gaming segment in order to develop and be ready to support a next-generation video card. I'm expecting that when a "G800 or whatever" is available, it'll have a noticeable advantage over the competetion, even nVidia. I'm expecting that when a G800 or whatever" is available, it'll have stable and mature drivers. Because that's what is necessary for Matrox to re-capture any of the gaming/enthusiast market and make the R&D investment worth it. Granted, anything that Matrox releases that offers a significant performance advantage over their current generation with the same quality will be accepted by Matrox loyalists, but again, that's not enough of a market to justify the R&D.

I suppose that's enough of my speculation for a while... No, I do not have any inside information, these are just my thoughts on the matter.

I hope your right and from a business sense it makes perfect sense. However what about all the engineers that nvidia got from Matrox? Even if they are obligated to not say anything, they were at Matrox for a good chuck of the last two years and would know about the new product. The engineers might keep the info to themselves but who knows.

Of course anyway you look at it we aren't going to know for awhile one way of the other
