Compatibility with DirectX 8.0a

I have a G400 Max using driver package 6.22 which are the latest MS certified drivers.
Will these run with DirectX 8.0a (I am now using DirectX 7.0a)

I just installed MS Train simulator and it wants me to use X8 instead of X7.
It runs great on X7.

By the way, MS train simulator is really great, especially for a 1.0 version.

Should I reinstall the game after I install X8

You shouldn't need to reinstall the game after upgrading to DX8.
