Looking for answers to 1x, 2x, 4x AGP questions...

So, can someone here tell me what it is that causes some people to have to force a certain level of AGP on a system?

My G400 has run flawlessly at 2x and/or 4x for it's entire life. I upgrade to a Shuttle AK31/Athlon XP 1600+/512mb DDR/Win2k system and now, all of the sudden, I have to force 1x.

It's not really a big deal. I was just wondering if anyone knew the cause.

noise on the AGP bus, caused by power regulation on the motherboard??? or signal integrity, that sort of stuff... I think it's all due to how good the AGP implementation of a Motherboard is.

on second thought, maybe you can RMA your board until you get a properly working revision ?

At work I run an Tyan Thunder K7 with 2x 1200 and a TigerMP with 2x 1800+, both equipped with a G450 that run smooth at AGP4x ...

Tyan use the best components on their boards, unlike Shuttle...

I've run this G400 on an Abit BH6, Abit KA7, Asus A7V133, ECS K7S5A, and now on a Shuttle AK31. Never had a problem until this Shuttle board.

Anyway, it's not a big deal if I'm running at 1x or 4x. This card is the next thing to be replaced anyway, if M would get off their asses and release a card!
