You make a good point, Matrox is not the only guilty one. But, if I had bought an FX5900 and it was not living up to its published specs, I would be on www.nvnews.net voicing my opinion. Excusing a company of shady business practice just because its industry norm doesn't sit well with me, and companies will only change if buyers voice thier legit complaints. You just can't let them off easy if the part doesn't do whats printed on the box.

Just a question, i just saw a video-clip from Half-Life 2, an that game will be released sometime during this fall.

I heard that Half-Life 2 use Dispelment Mapping, but does it use Vertex Shader 2.0 or other versions?

I fully agree, complaining about features that were promised but not delivered is OK.
But I won't say that I would never buy a product of said company again as I'm aware that this is not a standpoint you can really follow through consequently - making those claims sound naive.

By the way the SciTech drivers (currently open beta 2) seem to have a good start. Several people claim, that the 2D stuff is faster than with the nVidia driver (at least the nVidia users say so).
Hopefully the support for newer Matrox cards is comming SOON (TM).

Don't get me wrong, it is nice that Scitech is working on this. However, the card is already fairly expensive, extra expense is not really desirable. Also if I want a fast 2d card with good image quality I could just get a g400...

I don't use Linux, but I use OS/2 with the SciTech driver (bought it back in 1999 and updated to SNAP last year), so I would like to see accelerated support of the Parhelia.
If someone owns a nVidia card, he/she may still use the nVidia drivers, because SciTech get's "zero" information to support the nVidia chips.

All I can say is, the driver is worth the money, even if there is a free driver available.
When I started with the SciTech driver I had a ET-6000 based card from Hercules, then a Matrox Mystique and then a Matrox G400. All three had a OS/2 driver, that were good, but even the beta versions from SciTech were better (had only some glitches in the first betas with the ET-6000) than the drivers available from Tseng Labs or Matrox in terms of speed.
Matrox had some addons that were not available with the SciTech driver, but that has been corrected last year with the Dual Head and Zoom functions.

The greatest feature is still to be able to change the graphic card without installing a new graphic driver. I used this feature several times (checking hardware,...).

The only thing that's missing beside the Parhelia support is 3D.
I hope SciTech will focus on it (or at least get a deal with the main hardware manufacturers so they do it) after the final release of the Linux Xfree driver.
It would be very nice if they can directly support MesaGL.

I'm only a fully satisfied customer and do not work for SciTech.

Yeah they have more important things to address, such as fundamentals like a decent performing OGL ICD that they didn't get out the door until last month.

Now I assume they are finally working on their horrid performance? Or maybe their crappy Linux driver? I do recall a press release where the Parhelia will have "agressive" Linux support. I believe they will, in another year.

I think that the biggest issue Matrox is trying to address is how to keep every last engineer from walking, and from watching their market plummet downward.

I anticipate Matrox showing up on F*dcompany.com any day now.
