    How noisy is the G400MAX?

    I'm thinking of getting a G400, preferably the MAX. Since I want to use it in a home theatre machine, I'm worrying wether it's noisy and I should go for a straight G400?

    When watching films, I would relax about 2m from the machine away.

    PS: booting with tv only is possible with all G400s, isn't it?

      with 'booting' you mean seeing anything on the screen before the windows driver is loaded? in that case the answer is yes for the G400 in the Matrox line of cards.

      Why do you want a MAX? the vanilla is not that much slower in 3d (about 20-25%) and for video and HT capabalities it's 100% the same as the MAX, and without the fan thus noise.

          Why? Dunno, maybe because they're harder to get. They are in fact more useful for my application (than the max), but why not go for the best?

                  The CPU fan and intake/exhause fan in most cases drowns out the fansink on the MAX. If I open my case I can -barely- hear it. Its nowhere near the vacuum fans on some of the new graphics cards.

                      Seems my book isn't that clear on that point ;-)).

                      I think I get what's available. It should run in any 2x or 4x AGP-slot, shouldn't it?

                          My G400MAX (purchased in 1999) is now in my HTPC, and since I only use it for 2D and video watching, I removed the plug from the fan to the card. It runs smooth as can be, and is silent. Works great if you have your heart set on a G400MAX.

                              @mmp121: unplugging power cables is a no-no for my nerves, but thanks for the tip!

                              So I could attach the tv-set as the only head, boot up the machine and see everything that happens on tv?

                                  the fan of the max is not noisy. Well it can become noisy with time. I replaced mine with a Papst and I can't hear it at all.
                                  So you could always do the same if you find the max fan too noisy

                                      The TV must be connected to the second head.
                                      Set it up with a monitor on the primary, TV on secondary, Then once you have everything set up in clone mode, power down, and unplug the monitor.
