Slow Parhelia desktop (Solitaire) performance?

I was bored. Very bored. So I fired up Solitaire. After 3 goes I completed the game and watched all the cards bounce down from the piles...very very slowly.

Last time I played this, a long time ago before the days of Parhelia, the cards bounced off so quick the whole thing only took a couple of seconds. Today it was taking ~2 seconds per card!!!

System: Parhelia 128, Bios 1.0.004, drivers 1.04, 3*1280*1024*32 bit, CPU 2.4GHz P4, win2k Pro. Nothing else significant running.

Should it really be this slow? I don't have any other complaints, but then its mostly office apps, web dev, etc.

My guess: a long time ago, before the days of the Parhelia, you were running an older OS with an older version of Solitaire. These days, now that everyone's sick of the cards flying off the screen instantaneously, the game's been updated with a, um, frame-rate limiter

I haven't played solitaire for quite some time either, but I don't think it is normal for the finish to go this slow...

Could you check taskman, to see if there are no programs using unlikely resources ?
I had a significant slowdown of my entire windows desktop after switching some monitors (2nd monitor gone, now 1 monitor + feature display (TV)). A reboot brought back the speed...

Yes - after much testing, I can confirm that the card drop rate is now processor and GPU speed independent.

You know Solitaire is the single most used application on Windows?
There will be a completely redesigned one in Longhorn, I wonder how the cards will "fly" then?

It's not included in our locked-down win2k install at work... although because I have "developer" privileges I guess I could always bring it across from one of my home PCs... purely for test purposes of course

You see, it's really slow because there is a special Shader that is only supported in DirectX9 drivers. So once again, us Parhelia owners are SOL....

Actually I hate the windows Solitaire, it's TOO easy. The Gnome one limits the amount of times that you can go through the deck to 3. Gives it just a tiny bit more thought to playing it.

And you thought YOU were the bored ones...

I remember that the Parhelia always showed low solitaire performance. Had something to do with with the pixel shaders being only 1.x

Well I tried testing on my 9800XT-DVT last night, but didn't do sufficient testing to get a comparable result.
