Grand Prix 3 keeps crashing to desktop on G400

Everytime I play Grand Prix 3 on my PC it keeps crashing to the desktop on the first lap. I have tried running the game in various resolutions but no luck.
Sometimes crashes with an error in user.dll.

I am running a:
PIII 500,
Matrox G400 32mb Dualhead (have tried a single head but still does the exact same thing),
Matrox Powerdesk 6.22
DirectX 8.0
196mb
VIA Apollo m/board chipset

Any help would be appreciated as this game looks really good if i could only finish a lap.
