It looks like displacement mapping is going to be used by more engines in the future.

I have seen the full video.

It took place at the NVIDIA NV40 launch event. It obviously ran on a GF 6800. The effects were done with Pixel Shaders 3.0, High Dynaimc Range color, FP16, lots of shaders, virtual displacement mapping etc.

Tim Sweeney said this character model on display has more data (polygon and texture maps) than an entire level in Unreal I lol...

                pretty crazy lol

It's part of DX9, afaik, Matrox came out with it, while nV will support it first with drivers in games.

Matrox Displacement Mapping is part of the DX9 spec, but none of the vendors have chosen to implement it.

The displacement mapping that is occuring in that Unreal Engine (and using the GF6800U) is done through Vertex Shader 3.0 code.

I thought that ATI has had Displacement Mapping since the release of the R300...

I forgot to mention, that the engine looks amazing!!!

A few more years and we'll have life like characters and objects

So we now have Doom3, Half Life 2, and the Unreal Engine 3 that I am assuming will be used in the next Unreal series of games including UT2005 and Unreal 3?

                              Cheers,
                              Elie
